Kohler Purist Kitchen Faucet with Pull Out — Love the look, hate the leaky faucet

I really like Grohe products, but our builder was able to get good prices on Kohler fixtures so we chose all Kohler Purist faucets for our entire house (except for the laundry room). While we love the clean, modern look of the Kohler Purist faucets, our kitchen pull out faucet has been leaking non stop ever since the beginning.

I tried contacting Kohler before, but their customer service is a tricky place. I also stopped by the Kohler showroom in Bellevue, WA. The helpful gentlemen looked up the faucet (and our missing bathtub drain plug), but no resolution was found. Finally I emailed Kohler customer service again recently and they mailed us a replacement cartridge for the leaky kitchen faucet. How do we replace this cartridge? We have no idea.

Not only is it leaky, it was also installed so that you can’t move the handle all the way back. Perhaps there was not enough room for it. Also, the water pour is very smooth, but it pretty much splashes every where. Not what you want with your heavily used kitchen faucet. The water pressure is also very poor compared to other faucets in the kitchen. It was a very good thing that we installed a pot filler (non Kohler) above the stove, that faucet outputs some serious water — very useful indeed.

Our other Kohler Purist faucets in our bathrooms have not had any issues yet. If we are unable to replace the cartridge, we may end up replacing the kitchen faucet altogether or call in a plumber.

Tremendous activity and building going on at Harrison Streets Issaquah Highlands

There’s tons of activity going up here on Harrison Streets (and Grand Ridge Drive). Most empty lots have building going on, lots of big dump trucks and cement trucks coming and going. Some lots are getting flipped, but many have custom homes going up on them. You can notice that traditional home builders use big teams to build on a faster scale (less than 1 year), true custom homes such as modern homes take much longer, over a year or longer. Some homes are sitting at stand still for some reason, some are going up at furious speeds. There are not many lots available now, so it might be a good time to pick up one of the empty lots, or wait until the market drops…… It’s a little treacherous for kids to walk down to the bus stop, hope everyone is very careful. Good luck and best wishes to all the home owners!

There’s a new modern custom home for sale in Issaquah Highlands. It’s tucked away on Grand Ridge Drive where the big hermit homes are located. It’s a great warm NW style modern home built by March MacDonald Inc.

It has a hefty price tag of $3.4 mil. Who will be the lucky owners? It has great privacy except for a monster of a chateau home across the street. We attended one of the open houses at the house. Beautiful kitchen, floating moldings (love these), deep wine cellar, home theatre, your own walking trail in the woods, huge outdoor deck, and amazing exposed concrete throughout the home. We loved the floor to ceiling windows in the bedrooms as well. This home has a septic tank system, FYI. You can see the details of the listing here:

Second Roof Leak + Custom Construction in Issaquah Highlands

modern door custom

We went out for a long walk today and checked out some custom construction projects in Issaquah Highlands. We also ended up at 2 open houses in the Highlands. One was a small 1,800 single family home down near 24th. The agents said it was the only single family home in Issaquah highlands under $600K. The price was $575K and they showed it over 80 times in 2 days. The market is definitely at its peak….. We went to another open home on Harrison, the price was $1.5 mil, the home was in great shape, but old fashioned looking.

The low-slung modern home in the neighborhood has made big progress. I just love the modern wide front door with glass accents, this is one beautiful custom door! The entire trim of the interior matches the front door, the owner will be super lucky to live in such quality home. Whoever stained the trim and the door did a great job. This gave me some ideas on doing some staining of our own. They put in some amazing quality features and details in the home. Even though our home is finished, I still get inspiration from the new construction to make small changes and improvements.

We also visited a traditional custom home under construction. Very impressed with how clean they kept the construction site, so tidy with a working desk, First Aid Kit, etc. For a $1 Mil+ home, we were surprised they were using lower grade plywood and non-galvanized nails. But, they did a great job marking up the appliances, etc.

Bad news is that we have a second roof leak. I think we’d better get a water-proofing specialist out to inspect and seal the roof. The first leak was due to the roofer not sealing properly around the fire place on the main roof. This time, the flat roof of the front entry was not draining properly so the water leaked into our garage. What a pain, who wants to deal with water damage?

Other than the unfortunately roof leaks, we are looking at getting a fence and doing some Spring clean up inside and outside the home. Happy Spring everyone!

A visit to a Prefab Blu Home on Vashon Island

On a sunny and gorgeous day last August, we decided to go see a Blu prefab home on Vashon Island. They were having a special open house so we decided to hop on the ferry from West Seattle to Vashon Island.

The ferry ride is fairly short, less than 30 minutes and very relaxing. From there, it was a short drive over to the Blu Home open house.
Here is a view of the Blu prefab home. It is sitting on a beautiful site with unobstructed view of Puget Sound.

I’m not sure if it’s the gravel driveway, but the prefab home looked sort of “unfinished” and “temporary” in my opinion. It was a beautiful house, here are more pictures below.

I really liked the wooden sun / privacy shutters that are on barn door rails.

The interior was soothing and cozy, warm and modern. As you can see they used Modern Fan Company fans. We have the same fan in the bedroom.
Sorry that I don’t have a picture of the kitchen. It was nice with quality wooden cabinets. Not sure what kind though.

The view was incredible and unobstructed.

It had a nice glass awning that would be perfect for our side kitchen door. Overall, it was a very nice home, I love that most of the structure is built inside at a factory and not out in the Seattle rain and wind. The construction time is also dramatically shortened. What may be unknown is how the prefab portion impacts the value of the home and how banks would view it if you were to ask for a home loan. More prefab homes are being built, so these may be past issues. You can find out more about Blu Homes here:

While you are on Vashon Island, be sure to visit the Vashon Island Coffee Roasterie for their shade grown heirloom coffee. There’s also home made ice cream shop behind the coffee shop during the summer seasons. Enjoy.

Have You Seen Me? Missing Wooden Bear

Have you seen this wooden bear?

missing wood bear

Our neighbor’s wooden bear went missing a few weeks ago. This bear was special to them. If you see it around, please let us know.
It was sitting on their front concrete steps since they moved in. It is very heavy so it will take at least 2 adults to move it. They are a very sweet young couple. I hope the bear can be found.

I’m thinking it was either some teenage prank or a modern purist not liking the carved bear in front of the cool modern home. Just my thoughts.
In any case, I hope it turns up soon.

Another neighbor’s (super nice neighbor who borrowed an egg from me, what are neighbors for?) mountain bike got stolen right out of his garage during the day! We need to be aware/stay alert and communicate with each other. If you are a neighbor, please consider joining NextDoor or Issaquah Highlands Facebook group.

On a happy note, it was great meeting some of our neighbors and future neighbors in the recent weeks! Issaquah Highlands is a very special place full of nice neighbors.

Thanks for reading.

Issaquah Modern All Lit Up at Night!

I wanted to take a picture of our home all lit up at night. It looks like a jewel box. Most of the lights in our home are LED. What I found about LED lights are that they are not quite as bright as the regular incandescent lights. This is especially noticeable in the bathroom vanity and kitchen. I will still take LED energy savings over regular lights though.

The Coolest House Being Built in the Seattle Area Right Now (Issaquah)

This home in my neighborhood might be the coolest house being built in the Seattle area right now (or ever)!
I’m not sure if you can see in the pictures, but it has a suspended walkway between the main house and the garage-like structure. There must be millions spent just on the glass alone. What I really love about the house (other than the style), is the wood siding that is being used. I’m not sure what type of wood it is, but I’ve never seen it before. It is wide plank wood, lighter in color, but not too light. It looks absolutely amazing with the silver piping accents. Just wow. I can’t remember who the builder/architect is and the owner. If I find out the builder, I will update it here. This is one serious building project, they even have their own contractor trailer!

There is another cool, low-slung modern home across the street from the cool house. I love the low profile modern design. I hope a house like this goes up in front of our house to protect our view.

Eames Hang It All Coat Rack & General Update

We got a new coat rack – Eames Hang It All. Yet another gift from my generous sister.
We hung it in the Lobby next to the RV Garage door and the stairs.

This is a very handy coat rack for jackets, purses, hats, etc. It’s very colorful and perfect for that modern home or mid-century modern home.

We are liking living in our modern home. It’s very cozy and we like the floor plan lay out that we decided on. The change that we would make (& still can) is to add a door to the master bathroom. Due to the different schedules, one can get woken up by the other due to the water noise. Living among 4,000 – 10,000+ sq. feet homes as neighbors, we do not envy them at all. We like the size of our cozy modern home.

Latest update includes a roof leak in the kids bedroom (!), the roofer forgot to seal around the chimney (!). Bedroom doors are not quite aligned so they don’t close all the way. Looks like we will have to re-stain the wood siding as the finish has worn off already. High winds mixed with rain acts like a power wash on the house exterior in the Issaquah Highlands. A positive note is that we love the flooring that we chose, it has some issues, but overall it’s very soft on the foot and very easy to upkeep. I will do a separate post on that with more details and pictures soon. I will also do a post on our heat pump water heater, it does not quite keep up with our busy household, so on demand might have been a better choice. More on that soon.

Happy Spring everyone!
